When we started organizing our homes to create space for more enjoyment, we quickly learned that our shoes would be an ongoing challenge. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, but we’ve gathered a few of our favorite tips and tricks to help you keep your collection under control (especially if you're living in close quarters).

1. Group your shoes by style and color

Before you begin evaluating what you have, it can be helpful to group your shoes by style and color. Boots, sneakers, sandals, dress shoes, etc. — each style should be a category and then you can arrange them by color.

2. Evaluate your collection

Once you've grouped your shoes by style and color, you'll have a much better sense of what to keep and what to let go of. If you have four pairs of dress shoes that you only wear a few times a year and you always find yourself going for the same pair, you'll know what to do.

3. Once you’ve narrowed down your collection, consider where and how to store your shoes

Storing your shoes on the floor of your closet is standard practice, but it’s not the best use of space. Shoes get dusty, pairs get separated, and it can be challenging to keep things tidy. Our Entryway Rack is a great way to make the most of the vertical space under your clothes. Plus, it will make it easier to keep the collection in one place and fully visible.

4. Give your shoes the home they deserve

Having a set place for your shoes builds good habits, creates calm throughout the home and keeps your collection in check. By using an Entryway Rack or Large Bins , you can even give yourself a quota. You'll know exactly how many pairs of shoes you can fit, and once the collection extends beyond that, you'll know that it's time to pare down.

5. Find a second home for the shoes you don't need

Letting go of what we don’t need can help us create space for what brings us enjoyment. Plus, sometimes it just feels good. It’s important to do so responsibly. We’d recommend first looking to friends who might be able to use what you won’t. Click here for the next best things.
